The blatant fawning over President Obama by the press amazes me (or is it I?). Remember how, in the not too distant past, President Bush was portrayed as a Texas hayseed for his grammatical goofs? Every verbal gaffe was isolated, replayed, highlighted and repeatedly mocked everywhere from Letterman to the Late Evening News. The editorial page elitists cited President Bush’s oral blunders as evidence of deficient intelligence.
Things are entirely different with the current president. When President Obama multiplies verbal pauses exponentially, it means that he is deeply intelligent and gives well-reasoned answers. That was to be expected. But I never would have expected this. It seems that when the president improperly uses pronouns, the problem is with the English language—not with him.
Most of us received papers in school bleeding red ink from where we used “I” in the place of “me” or vice versa. Had I known at the time, I could have simply told my teachers that I was using a more evolved version of the English language. I’m sure they would have accepted my reasoning and raised my grade—just as have the elite editorialists from the New York Times. Here is a counter argument.
Why don’t you and me take a look at what they have to say? Besides, the President needs for you and I to cut him some slack.
