Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

The Prayers of Monica and Mom

Although his father Patricius was an unbeliever until just a few years before he died, Augustine of Hippo was blessed to have a Christian mother. Throughout years of rebellion, sin, adultery and lust, Monica never failed to pray and fight for her son’s salvation.

One day in late August, 386, when Augustine was 32 years old, his mother’s prayers were answered. From that point until his death in 430, Augustine became one of the most influential Christians in history. Christian History magazine put it succinctly when they wrote, “After Jesus and Paul, Augustine of Hippo is the most influential figure in the history of Christianity.” And it was all because of the faithful prayers of his mother, Monica—just as all I am is because of the faithful prayers of my mom, Carol.

Happy Mother's Day!
