Romans 11:33-36

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Christmas Family Devotional Guide

5 REASONS JESUS HAD TO COME: #5 – To Bring Something New and Improved

(Parents: For this devotion you will need your Bibles and something new for your children to try, such as a new flavor of ice cream, or a new flavor of soda, or a new food, even a product that is now “New and Improved”)

Ask your children if they like trying new things.
Tonight we have something new for you to try. (At this point let them try the new item)

Well, what did you think? Isn’t it great to try out new and improved things
Wouldn’t it be neat if you could try new things and never be disappointed.
Wouldn’t it be great if someone told you they were going to bring you something new and it was guaranteed to be the best thing you had ever tried in your life.

Jesus came to bring us that exact new thing. And it was the greatest new and improved item that the world has ever seen.

In today’s passage, the prophet Jeremiah told the nation of Israel about something that was coming that would be new and improved. And Jesus came to bring in this glorious promise.

Read Jeremiah 31:31-35

The old covenant was something we had to strictly follow. If we did not follow it all then God would not be our God. The Law was given to show us how far we have fallen from God’s perfect standard. But it could not give us forgiveness.

We knew that we had sinned and there was absolutely nothing we could do about it. We were separated from God and no amount of good works would take away our sin. We were dead already.

But praise God!! He loved us so much He wanted to bring in a new and better covenant.
Jesus ushered in this new promise at Lord’s Supper. He took the cup and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22:20).

So how is this new covenant Jesus came to bring us better?
1. Our sins are now forgiven and we can live with God forever. (“This is the my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” Matthew 26:28).

2. God will be your God and you will be His child (Jer. 31:33). It is not up to our actions now. Our sins are forgiven! Not only that, we have been adopted by God as His children (Rom 8:14-17).

3. God’s ways are not written in our hearts and not on stones. God’s Holy Spirit is now indwelling in those who follow Jesus. God’s Spirit helps us to obey.

I am so glad that Jesus came to bring us something new!!!
